Sabbaths – The Sabbath of the First, Eighth, and Tenth Day!

Sharing is Caring!

Updated:-2023/03/19

What Are The Different Types of Sabbaths In The Bible?

This week we shall discuss different sabbaths in the Bible. Have you ever heard of the sabbath of the eighth day? Last week and the week before, I defined the Sabbath and I explained to whom it was given.

I have also touched on the fact there are many other sabbaths besides the seventh day. This week, I’m going to explore those other sabbaths. However, before I do that, allow me to introduce myself.

I am Leroy Daley of Blogging About the Word. I teach Christians how to better understand their Bibles.

I utilize Bible studies to accomplish this. In them, I make full use of Scriptures to explain other Scriptures. I use them here a little, there a little, line upon line, precepts upon precepts.

Precepts must be on equally correct precepts or else we will have confusion and misinformation in the Church.

Did you know that besides the seventh day, the Holy Sabbath of rest unto the Lord, there are other Sabbaths?

How Many Sabbaths Are There In The Bible

These could happen on any day of the week, except on the seventh day. Additionally, these are those that evolve making the Jews go to the synagogue on the seventh day, or on the Sabbath.

Recall the Sabbath at first was a rest day. On that day, the Jews would not leave their tents.

Read this Bible Study to the end, and I’ll give you a bonus. I will explain a feature of the Sabbath that will surprise you. It may even make you mad at me, but it will be the truth.

As I explained, in a previous Bible study, there are two categories of Sabbath.

First, there is the rest of the holy Sabbath unto the Lord, then there is the Sabbath, a Sabbath of rest unto you, (Exodus 16:23 & Leviticus 16:31).

I have expounded the first. So today, I will explain the second, a Sabbath of rest unto you.

At this point, you may be asking, how many sabbaths are there?

The Sabbath of the First Day

Now, let’s look at the Sabbath of the first day.

And the Lord spake unto Moses saying, speak unto the children of Israel.

Leviticus 23:24

Note whom the Lord is addressing via Moses, the Children of Israel, not the world.

Saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall [you] have a Sabbath.”

Leviticus 23:24

So you see a Sabbath can happen on another day besides the seventh day. For in this instance, it occurs in the seventh month, on the first day of the month.

So this is a Sabbath that falls on the first day of the month. The Bible says it is,

A memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation.”

Leviticus 23:24, 39

So there we have it folks, a Sabbath, which occurs on the first day.

I bet you never heard of the Sabbath of the first day before. Yep. But there is one.

What Is a Holy Convocation?

It’s a holy gathering, a meeting of people coming together and this holy convocation here is the prelude to the Children of Israel meeting on the Sabbath day in the synagogue.

In other words, it’s also, what other religious groups misunderstand and start going to church on Saturday.

[You] shall do no servile work therein: but [you] shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.”

Leviticus 23:25

I can’t understand why people adopt, just pick out, pluck out the seventh day and ignore the rest of the rituals and ignore the rest of the Sabbaths?

Where Is Your Offering of Fire?

Sabbath goers where is your offering of fire unto the Lord? He requested it!

Why don’t the Seventh Day Adventists not honor any rituals that accompany the Sabbaths?

For example, above, why don’t they honor the Lord’s request? He instructed, “but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord” (Leviticus 23:25).

The only people who do this and the only ones who are supposed to keep the Sabbaths and their rituals are the Children of Israel!

God gave it to them!

Because those days are for particular reasons.

The SDA just pick out the day, the one day, and the day that was not really assigned to them and started honoring the day and God couldn’t care less if they did because the Lord never gave it to anybody besides the Children of Israel.

The Sabbath of the Eighth Day?

I have looked at the Sabbath of the first day; the seventh day, now let’s look at the Sabbath of the eighth day.

Now, we’re going to look at the Sabbath of the eighth day and I’m not making this up. This is all in the Bible.

I present the Sabbath of the eighth day.

Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord, seven days.

On the first day shall be a Sabbath and on the eighth day shall be a Sabbath.” So you see there (Leviticus 23:39).

There are Sabbaths on the first day; Sabbaths on the seventh day; Sabbaths on the eighth day, and I’m not finished yet, there’s a Sabbath on another day.

The Sabbath of the Tenth Day?

So wait, there is also the Sabbath of the tenth day.

And the bullock for the sin offering, and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall one carry forth without the camp; ... they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung.”

Leviticus 16:27

He that burneth them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterwards, he shall come into the camp.”

Leviticus 16:28

The 7th Month & the 10th Day is a Sabbath of Rest to You

And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country or a stranger that sojourneth among you.”

Leviticus 16:29

For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the Lord .

Leviticus 16:30

Sabbaths of Rest Unto You

Remember, I told you that there are two categories of Sabbaths: “unto the Lord“, and “unto you“.

So this one is a Sabbath of rest unto you, in the seventh month on the tenth day.

It shall be a Sabbath of rest unto you. And you shall afflict your soul by a statute forever (Leviticus 16:31).

So there you have it, folks, there is also a Sabbath of rest on the tenth day.

And there is no end to it for it shall be a sign “forever”!

Note that this is a “Sabbath of rest unto you“.

This means that it’s a rest day that the Children of Israel observed to remember their lack of rest in Egypt for four hundred thirty years.

That’s the reason for these rest days. The rest day is for a specific reason. This rest is not unto the Lord, as the seventh day, but unto the people.

The Bonus

All right! So at the start, I told you, I’ll give you a bonus. And this is the bonus.

Earlier, in a previous Bible study, I explained that the Bible, the Holy Bible that we use, is a Jewish book.

I also explained that we cannot apply everything from it to our lives because some things are only for the Children of Israel.

However, we could and should embrace and adopt things which have spiritual applications to our lives.

If we observe the seventh-day Sabbath of our Lord, why don’t we keep the Passover with all its rituals?

Because the Passover too, folks is a Sabbath. Yes, it is. The Jewish Passover is a Sabbath.

If some of us keep the seventh day as Holy and ignore all the rituals that associate with it, yet, they don’t keep the Passover, why? It’s also a Sabbath too.

The Passover is a Sabbath unto the people. It is the 14th day of the first month. This is the 14th day of the month, Abib or Nisan by the Hebrew calendar.

The equivalent of this time in the English calendar would be March or April.

Okay, let me read “And the Lord spake unto Moses saying,” (Leviticus 23:1).

In all these texts, the Lord is specifying His audience.

Moses Addresses the Children of Israel

He tells Moses, make sure you address the Children of Israel. Remember there were other people living in the land at that time, but the Lord never told Moses to speak to them.

But He instructed Moses to speak to the Children of Israel, instruct them, tell them this is what I want of them.

If we’re going to adopt stuff that the Lord gave to Israel, we cannot adopt everything and we must only use those with spiritual applications because all are not for us.

It’s not intended for us. Jesus Christ is intended for us and for all, but not the Law and the Jewish customs.

“Speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them, concerning the feast of the Lord, which he shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts” (Leviticus 23:2).

So here the Lord is telling Moses, tell the Children of Israel these are my holy meetings that they shall honor.

Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ” (Leviticus 23:3).

This is the prelude to the seventh day, going to church on the seventh day. Definitely, this holy convocation here.
Ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings“, in all your house, so you stay home (Leviticus 23:3).

That’s what the Lord is saying here, stay home on the Sabbath. So he says, these are the feast of the Lord, even holy convocations, which he shall proclaim in their seasons in the 14th day of the first month at eve is the Lord’s Passover.

How Do the Feasts Relate to the Sabbaths?

So it’s on the first day of the month, Abib, the 14th day is the Passover and on the 15th day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the Lord.

Seven days, ye must eat unleavened bread. So I’m saying that if we’re keeping the Sabbath we should honor these rituals too, not just the day.

You know, it makes no sense. On the first day, he shall have a holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein, but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord, seven days in the seventh day is a holy convocation, he shall do no servile right therein.

We cannot embrace the law and the Sabbath if we’re not Jews and then praise Jesus Christ at the same time, because they’re contrary, the law makes nothing perfect.

But embracing Jesus Christ brings us better hope. It is superior to the law. That’s why the scripture says that Christ is the end of the law for righteousness.

So if you want to be righteous, you can’t keep the law or the Sabbath and be righteous now, because Christ is the end of that era. You have to embrace Christ.

Listen as this Jewish Man Explains How the Sabbaths Work!

And that is why people who do that, in this dispensation, are not saved, they know not Christ. They are just churchgoers.

They have no experience with the Lord. None at all. I know it will make some hurt. But listen to this, this is the Jewish apostle to the Greeks, to the gentile speaking.

And I’m talking about Paul and it is in Romans 3.

But now we know that what things soever the law saith, it’s said to them, who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped and all the world may become guilty before God.

So the law made everybody guilty before God.

Therefore by the deeds of the law, there shall no flesh be justified in his sight.” We can’t do the deeds of the Law and be righteous in the eyes of the Lord.

And we can’t do the deeds of the Law and believe on Jesus Christ at the same time because the two can’t exist together.

The Law focuses on doing righteous acts but embracing Jesus Christ is only by faith!

For, by the law is the knowledge of sin.”

But remember that even before the Law came, there were righteous people.

So the Law is only made for the unrighteous. So don’t think that you need the Law to live righteously because people were living righteously before it came.

Oh! “But now the righteousness of God, without the law, has manifested itself, being witnessed by the law and the prophets.

Yeah, the law and the prophets usher in that era. But right up to Christ, that’s where it ended. Listen as Paul explains the Sabbath.

Listen as this Jewish Apostle Explains the Sabbaths

He says, I say the truth in Christ, I lie not.

My conscience also bear me witness in the Holy Ghost that I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart, for I would wish that myself were a cursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen, according to the flesh, who are Israelites to whom pertaineth the adoption and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the law and the service of God and the promises, whose are the fathers and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came who is over all God blessed forever. Amen.

So Paul explained it right here that the law was not given to the Gentiles, but to his brethren in the flesh who are Israelites.

It’s very interesting that people will just cherry-pick portions of the scripture to suit their own purposes and ignore others.

But we can’t do that with the Word of God if we expect to get the full benefit from the scriptures.

Conclusion

To conclude, how many types of sabbaths are there in the Bible? There are many!

The principal one is the seventh day is the Holy Sabbath unto the Lord. However, there are many other Sabbaths that could occur on any day of the week, except on the seventh.

There is a Sabbath of the first, eighth, and tenth day. These are all rest days or Sabbaths for the Children of Israel.

Therefore the Lord demarcates them from the high day, the seventh day, he describes them as Sabbaths onto you, meaning Sabbaths for the people.

By observing them, the Lord wants the Children of Israel to remember always their past. The only “Sabbath unto the Lord is the seventh day or the high day, but all the other Sabbaths are “unto the people“.

Finally, listen as the Jewish apostle to the Gentiles, he explains, who observes the law.

He says, “Even the righteousness of God, which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all, and upon all them that believe, for there is no difference” (Romans 3:22).

What Could We Learn About Sabbaths From Paul?

For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24).

Whom God had set forth to be propitiation through faith in his blood.”

To declare his righteousness for the remissions of sins that are passed, through the forbearance of God” (Romans 3:25).

“To declare I say at this time, his righteousness that he might be just, and the justifier of him, which believeth in Jesus” (Romans 3:26)

Where is boasting then? It’s excluded. By what law? Or of works? Nay: but by the law of faith” (Romans 3:27)

Therefore, we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law” (Romans 3:28).

Is he the God of the Jews only? [I]s he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also” (Romans 23:29).

Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith and uncircumcision through faith” (Romans 23:30).

Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid. Yay. We establish the law” (Romans 3:31).

Thank you guys for sticking with me to the end of this bible study. The blessings of the Lord be on you.
Peace, until we meet again in the Bible Study, bye!

I find this very informative, seriously! Just this lesson has answered questions regarding the two different categories of Sabbaths.
One question, though, what happens when the seven-day Sabbath falls on a day of Holy Convocation? Which one has precedence?
    Shalom.

    Hello,

I’m happy you find this Bible Study helpful.

If the seventh day falls on a day of Holy Convocation the Sabbath takes precedence.

The seventh day always takes precedence over all other days of observance because it’s the most holy day.

Additionally, it’s a day “unto God” and it’s a perpetual covenant for the Jews.
