Being a prayer warrior isn’t the easiest thing in the world; it is hard. It takes a lot of strength and energy to fight spiritual battles.

Paul was a well-known prayer warrior. He emulated Christ and was one of the best examples of a prayer warrior.

He was selfless in His pursuit of Christ and always looked out for the church.

Nevertheless, let’s study the duties and characteristics of a Prayer Warrior. Additionally, I shall also examine how to become one.


What Are The Main Duties of a Prayer Warrior?

The list below is not exhaustive but it contains some of the main duties of every Prayer Warrior.

1. Intercession

Prayer warriors are committed to interceding on behalf of others. This is their main duty. They pray for individuals, communities, nations, the local and global church, and specific needs or situations.

They carry the burden of others in prayer, seeking God’s intervention, guidance, healing, and transformation.

They’re burden bearers and carry the body of Christ in prayer. Additionally, they stand-in-the gap for all before God.

2. Growing Knowledge of The Word of God

To be an effective Prayer Warrior a Believer in Jesus Christ must possess an ever-increasing knowledge of the true Word of God.

It is this perception of the Word that will motivate, stimulate, guide, and direct the Prayer Warriors’ spiritual contention for us.

This Warrior shall not know what to pray or not to pray about if he or she is ignorant about what the Lord says on the topic.

Observe, from your personal experiences that the most effective Prayer Warriors always Pray The Scriptures. This is crucial to get results. God is only obligated to execute His own Words. So, pray them back to Him!

3. Faithfulness And Consistency

Prayer Warriors are characterized by their faithfulness, consistency, and persistence in prayer. They maintain a consistent prayer life.

Every Prayer Warrior spends time regularly in communion with God and in seeking His will. They are willing to persevere in prayer, even when they don’t see immediate answers or visible results.

4. Put On The Whole Armor of God

Prayer warriors seek to discern God’s leading and direction through prayer. They seek to always do the will of God not only for themselves but also for those around them.

As a result of this, the enemy is angered and wages a constant war against them. Hence, it is vital for every prayer warrior and every Believer to put on the complete Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18).

5. Persevering In Prayers

Prayer Warriors engage in spiritual warfare through prayer. Praying is waging unseen war. We must resist the Devil and wage war when needed.

As Prayer Warriors (Believers in general), we need to recognize the Devil’s role in the world and actively pray against his schemes, oppression, and spiritual strongholds.

We also ought to pray for protection, deliverance, and the advancement of God’s kingdom. The answers to prayers take time. Hence, it is essential to persevere in prayer like the Persistent Widow (Luke 18:1-8).

6. Maintain a Solid Relationship With God

Prayer Warriors understand the importance of having a solid personal relationship with the Lord. It is vital to stay saturated in Him, or the world will fill us with its desires.

Prayer Warriors seek to align their own lives with God’s will, continually growing in faith, holiness, and dependence on God.

They recognize that their effectiveness in prayer is directly linked to their own spiritual journey and growth.

7. An Awareness of the Real Enemy

Every Prayer Warrior possesses an acute awareness that people are not the Believers’ enemy.

Instead, he or she knows that our fight is not against “flesh and blood” but against systems and the cosmos.

Our Fight Is Not Against People

Apostle Paul says:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Ephesians 6:12

What Are The Main Characteristics of a Prayer Warrior?

Here are a few fundamental characteristics of every Prayer Warrior:

1. Faith And Trust

Prayer Warriors have a deep faith in God. They trust in Him and know His will. They know (without a doubt) that prayer is effective and that God hears and answers their prayers according to His will.

2. Diligence and Persistence

All genuine Prayer Warriors are committed to a consistent and disciplined prayer life. They are diligent in seeking God.

And this they achieve through prayer and persistent intercessions, especially in the midst of challenges or apparent delays in answers.

3. Led By The Spirit

Prayer warriors always walk in the Holy Spirit. They rely on the Spirit’s guidance and discernment in their prayers, allowing Him to shape their intercessions and align them with God’s purposes. We must walk this life with the help of the Holy Spirit, and we will most certainly fail if we solely rely on ourselves.

4. Humility and Submission

Prayer warriors approach God with humility, recognizing their dependence on Him. God honors obedience and complete submission. They know that prayer is not about their own power or abilities but about completely surrendering to God’s will and praying accordingly.

5. Love, Compassion, and Serving

Prayer warriors genuinely care for others and have a heart of compassion. They’re filled with the love of God, which has been poured into them through their prayers. They’re overflowing with compassion for others because they see and hear the heart of God, henceforth serving them.

6. Altruism

Prayer warriors are selfless. They put others’ needs before their own. They’re filled with the love of God and pour it into the lives of those around them.

7. Intimacy with God

Prayer warriors prioritize their relationship with God above all else. They invest time in personal prayer, worship, and studying God’s Word, seeking to deepen their intimacy and communion with Him because this is the secret to being a powerful prayer warrior.

8. Boldness and Bold Prayer

Prayer warriors approach prayer with boldness, knowing that they can approach God’s throne of grace with confidence. They are unafraid to ask God for big things (especially the impossible) and believe in His ability to do immeasurably more than they can ask or imagine. They exercise faith in incredible ways.

9. Perseverance and Endurance

Prayer warriors exhibit perseverance and endurance in their prayer life. They do not easily give up or lose heart but continue to press on in prayer, trusting God’s timing and purposes because they know that God is delighted in persevering prayer.

10. Praise and Thanksgiving

Prayer warriors incorporate praise and thanksgiving into their prayers. They express gratitude to God for His goodness, faithfulness and answered prayers, recognizing that He deserves all honor and glory. At the end of the day, God is worthy of it all.

11. Enjoys praying!

Every Prayer Warrior must enjoy praying. He must have faith in God and be bold and so on, but above all, he must enjoy spending time with God in prayer.

While these characteristics of a Prayer Warrior are important, yet, they are not exhaustive. There are other features that we could incorporate to explain this position.

How To Become A Prayer Warrior?

Here are some steps you can take to become a prayer warrior:

  1. Understand the Power of Prayer: Recognize that prayer is a powerful tool that connects us with God and allows us to participate in His work. Understand that prayer can accomplish transformation, healing, guidance, and breakthrough in both our lives and the lives of others.
  2. Commit to a Life of Prayer: Make a personal commitment to prioritize prayer in your life. Set aside a particular time each day to pray, seek God’s presence, and communicate with Him. Make prayer a regular and consistent practice.
  3. Study God’s Word: Dive into the Bible to understand God’s character, promises, and instructions for prayer. As you study God’s Word, you will gain insight into His heart and His will, which will shape your prayers and help you pray in alignment with His will. Stay in His voice.
  4. Develop a Prayer Strategy: Consider creating a prayer strategy that includes specific areas or people you want to pray for regularly. This can help you maintain focus and intentionality in your prayer life. It could involve prayer lists, prayer journals, or using prayer apps to organize your prayer requests.
  5. Seek God’s Presence: Prayer is not just about making requests; it’s about developing an intimate relationship with God. Spend time in worship seeking to encounter God’s presence. Learn to sit down and have conversations with the Lord. Cultivate an atmosphere of intimacy where you can hear from God and align your heart with His.
  6. Intercede for Others: Prayer warriors have a heart for intercession. Pray for the needs of others, including family, friends, community, and global issues. Lift up specific concerns, such as physical healing, emotional well-being, spiritual growth, and salvation. Allow compassion to guide your intercessory prayers.
  7. Pray with Boldness and Faith: Approach God with boldness and faith, knowing that He is able to do exceedingly and abundantly more than we can ask or imagine. Believe in His power and trust His timing. Pray with confidence, knowing that God hears and answers prayers according to His will.
  8. Stay Persistent and Persevere: Don’t give up easily or become discouraged in your prayer life. Stay persistent and persevere even when answers may not come immediately or in the way you expect. Trust that God is working behind the scenes and that your prayers are definitely being heard.
  9. Stay Connected to a Local Church/Community: Surround yourself with like-minded believers who are also passionate about prayer. Join a prayer group or community where you can pray together, share testimonies, and support one another in your prayer journey.
  10. Grow in Discernment: Seek to grow in discernment through prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in your prayers, to reveal God’s heart and will, and to provide insight into the situations and needs you are praying for. Develop a sensitivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Can Anyone Be a Prayer Warrior?

No, anyone cannot be a Prayer Warrior! Every Prayer Warrior must be a Believer in Jesus Christ and born-again.

If you don’t belong to Christ, how could you “war” in his realm and for his Church? If you are not spirit and spiritual, how could you contend spiritually? You cannot!! John 3:6.

If anyone fulfills these basic requirements then he or she could become a Prayer Warrior! Because we are more than conquerors in Christ (Romans 8:31).

But only in Christ! We can do nothing by ourselves. He is the Vine and we are the Branches!

Yet, He calls us to live a life of purpose, passion, and fulfillment in Him!

It is possible to live the impossible through Jesus. Prayer makes all things possible.

But don’t forget to fast. There are some battles that we will never win unless we combine both praying and fasting! That’s power!!

Requirements To Contend In The Spirit!

Here are a few steps to take if you want to become a Prayer Warrior. But remember to be effective in this area you must be knowledgeable about the true Word of God. You must know God and Christ!

Otherwise, you are setting yourself up to fail. Because as you storm the strongholds of Hell the Rulers of Darkness will target and attack you.

They will not spare any area of your life. The spectrum runs from private and personal to public and known facets of your life will come under attack.

The Enemy will attack your relationships including your marriage, business, family, friendships and so on!

I don’t want to scare you but you cannot be a PW and ignorant of how the spirit-world operates. You must know this.

Thus, it is important that the characteristics of a Prayer Warrior mature into godly habits.

Nevertheless, here are a few steps to aid you to become an effective PW.

Step #1: Personal Commitment

Becoming a prayer warrior starts with a personal commitment to prayer and a willingness to devote time and effort to developing a consistent prayer life.

It involves setting aside dedicated time for prayer, seeking God’s presence, and intentionally interceding for others. Don’t make promises to God; instead, commit to praying regularly.

Step #2: Relationship With God

Building a strong relationship with God. This is foundational to being an effective prayer warrior. Without a relationship with Him, you cannot fight the Devil.

Cultivating a personal relationship with Him through prayer and studying His Word is mandatory.

Step #3: Learning And Growing

Being a prayer warrior is an ongoing journey of learning and growing. However, the Lord will not answer every prayer.

On the one hand, not every answer will be a yes! Yet, a Prayer Warrior is filled with unshakable faith in God through Jesus Christ.  

Step #4: Community And Support

Engaging in prayer with others and being part of a supportive community can strengthen your prayer life. Joining a prayer group, participating in prayer meetings or Bible studies, and connecting with like-minded believers can provide encouragement, accountability, and opportunities to intercede together and pray effectively.
