Why Repent of Our Sins – 9 Biblical Reasons

Sharing is Caring!

Why Do We Repent?

Why repent now when we could repent another day? We may consider our opinions but it is only the Word of God that will supply us with the reasons to repent of our sins.

If all my sins are forgiven, why must I continue to repent?

Our points of view are not adequate for this, for we need the Lord God to tell us the reasons for repentance.

Consequently, many pastors don’t use or say the word “repent” when they preach.

Nevertheless, below you will find nine biblical motivations for repentance.

9 Biblical Reasons to Repent

  1. We repent because the Kingdom of Heaven is near. “Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 3:2; 4:17).
  2. Here’s another motive to repent. We repent to believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus preached: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:15).
  3. Then, we repent because it is a prerequisite for baptisms. It’s necessary before both water and Spirit baptisms. “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:38).
  4. Additionally, repentance precedes conversion. However, conversion comes before atonement. “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19).
  5. One of the fruits of repentance is forgiveness. David Worcester said, “Repentance is the doorway to forgiveness”. When others repent we should forgive them. When we repent God forgives us. “If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. [I]f he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him” (Luke 17:3-4).
  6. The Lord God commands us to repent. “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men [everywhere] to repent” (Acts 17:30).
  7. We must repent before we can turn to God. “repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance” (Acts 26:20.
  8. Failure to repent could result in physical and spiritual death. Again Jesus teaches, “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3, 5).

Why Is Repentance Necessary?

To conclude, let’s do a recap. Repentance is a foundational doctrine of Jesus Christ, (Hebrews 6:1). It’s one of the first prerequisites of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Even though the Kingdom of God is nearby we cannot enter into it unless we repent.

Furthermore, we must repent to believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We cannot enter the kingdom of heaven unless we believe in Jesus Christ. And we must repent to experience re-birth. Repentance is a condition for conversion. It is also a pre-qualification for the forgiveness of sins.

The Lord commands us to repent. Repentance is necessary for us to turn to God. If we fail to repent we will commit physical and spiritual suicide, and the final reason for repentance is a sad one.

Jesus Will Judge the World

The Lord “hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead” (Acts 17:31).

To avoid experiencing the wrath of God in the “appointed day” we must repent now. The Lord commands everybody to repent and believe in “that man whom [He] has ordained”, that is Jesus Christ.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is our “assurance. He has power over death and hell to preserve those that repent and turn to God by him.

The Lord has shown us why we need to repent of our sins. Nobody can enter into the Kingdom of God unless he or she first repents.

Repentance is so mounamental that Jesus uses the Parable of the Lost Sheep to explains its significance to his Believers.

Two Enemies of Repentance

Finally, there are two chief enemies of repentance: Time and Death. Consequently, whenever you hear the Gospel of Jesus repent and believe it.

Do not postpone your decision to repent.

That could be the last time God calls you to repentance. He doesn’t promise tomorrow to anyone.

There is no repentance in the grave anymore. Repent before you die. Do it now!

Folks, brothers and sisters, the time to repent is now. When the season of repentance is closed our opportunity to repent is lost.

So, repent today and inherit eternal life.

Do you think that a preacher or teacher of the Kingdom of God should replace “repent” with an effective synonym?

However, no one will produce one as efficient and effective as simply saying “repent”.
