Babylon - Great Whore on Many Waters
Earlier I had deferred discussing Revelation Chapter Fourteen Verse Eight because it was the only verse in the chapter dealing with Babylon. However, now I shall assimilate that verse into this chapter. In this Revelation Bible Study let’s identify what represents Babylon that great city.
Christ Jesus, in Revelation Chapter Seventeen, personified Babylon, “that great city” as a “great whore”. This figure of speech will reveal her identity and her activities.
“And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication,” Revelation 14:8.
The Scripture speaks of Babylon’s devastation but is it a literal city? As we continue with this study, we will discover the truth concerning her status. The Scriptures liken Babylon to an unmarried loosed woman, a the great whore. Babylon is Fallen.
The first mention of Babylon presents clues to her identity. This mention is associated with fornication or idolatry. Israel had secretly turned from the Lord God and served other gods. Consequently, they were carried away captives into Babylon, 2 Kings 17:24.
Therefore, from the start Babylon is connected, in some way, to idolatry and rebellion against the Lord. Babylon is also associated with captivity. The Babylonians took the Children of Jacob captives and refused to released them, 2 Kings 17:4.
Babylon is the Great Whore
In the vision of John the Divine, an angel of Heaven approached him an offered to explain the meaning of the great whore sitting on the red beast, Babylon.
“And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sits upon many waters,” Revelation 17:1.
Let’s start with some background information on “the great whore”. In the previous chapter, we saw how Christ Jesus judged the nations and Satan’s Seat or The Seat of The Beast. Through his conversation with John we learn Babylon’s judgment has come. Babylon is the great whore.
In an earlier writing I remarked that many Bible Teachers interpret “sea” to mean people. However, in the Scripture above “waters” is a synonym for nations.
I shall utilize the connotations of a whore to explain who or what Babylon is. Additionally, the attention of a prostitute is not free because a client has to pay for her favors.
“With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication,” Revelation 17:2.
Babylon Takes Captives
The Scripture tells us the clientele of the great whore comprise of “kings” and the other people living on earth. However, she treats each category of her clients differently. Babylon keeps the “kings” of the earth captives. However, she often destroys the people she captures, 2 Kings 25:21. The great whore’s relationship with her clients is contingent on how she can best benefit form their association.
Let’s learn from the natural to understand the spiritual. King Jehoiakim was Babylon first king captive, 2 Kings 24:1. Jehoiachin the king of Judah was the second king captive of Babylon, 2 King 24:11-16. King Zedekiah was the third king made captive in Babylon, 2 Kings 25:1-7. The great whore takes captives.
However, the great whore kills even the kings in captivity if they rebelled or become invaluable. She only takes captive the best or strongest and the rich, 2 Kings 25:11. She leaves the poor because they have nothing to offer, 2 Kings 24:14, 2 Kings 27:7 and 2 Kings 25:12.

The Babylonians are not monotheistic as the Hebrews because they worship many gods, 2 Kings 17:30-33. Israel did not completely destroy all the nations of the land as the Lord told them to, therefore, they adopted their ways and served their gods. This is the wine of the great whore’s fornication.
Babylon is the The Roman Catholic Church The Great Whore
Spiritually, Babylon and Assyria are one and the Lord will treat them accordingly. The Lord God is married, spiritually, to Israel, Jeremiah 3:14. However, because Israel disobeyed her husband she had other lovers, she went a-whoring. By this, I mean she worshipped other gods. This is how the great whore “sits on many nations” by encouraging and teaching them to worship another god.
Therefore, the teaching of Babylon to serve another god is the wine of her fornication by which she sits on the peoples of the earth. Therefore, the great whore, Babylon is not a person but a system, a political system. This system operates outwardly as a church, The Roman Catholic Church, but internally it is Satan’s Seat. It teaches all nations on earth, to worship and serve Mary the mother of Jesus Christ instead of God, Deuteronomy 6:13-15 and Exodus 34:14. She is the great whore.
Babylon courts and hold all “kings” of the earth captives. Have you ever noticed what happen when The Pope, The Beast, visits any country? Until he leaves that country, even in the USA, everyone treats the Pope with more respect than the incumbent president and he shuts down any city he visits until he leaves. Even the President of the USA cannot come in close proximity to him while he is in the streets unless it is pre-arranged.

Babylon Deceives the Nations
Finally, the Roman Catholic Church, Babylon sits on many nations, peoples or tongues because it has them captives by its idolatrous teachings and practices. There are Roman Catholic Churches (RCC) in every country in the world. The RCC teaching and practices are idolatrous this include the worship of the Pope by kissing his ring; kneeling and bowing to him and calling him ‘Holy Father” which, title and action are reserved for the Lord God only, Matthew 23:9. The worship of Mary the mother of Jesus Christ, calling her “Holy Mary”, kneeling, and praying to her statue is idolatry. These actions effectively are idolatrous because Babylon diverts worship of God to other gods.
The Roman Catholic Church is Babylon the great whore and Vatican City is the great city of Babylon.
In closing, The Roman Catholic Church has “committed fornication” with the “kings and people of the earth” and made them “drunk”. Owing to their inebriated state the nations are unaware of the deception they are captives to, they are drunken captives to Babylon by “the wine of her fornication.” The Lord says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” The nations are drunken by the wine of Babylon. How can they learn knowledge when they are drunk?
