Four Ways to Keep Your Soul
When I speak about how to keep your soul, I am referring to maintaining a restored soul. It’s one thing to have our souls restored by the Holy Spirit of Christ but another matter all together to keep your soul. There is no scriptural defined sequence of events concerning how to keep one’s soul. However, there are things the Scriptures encourage Christians to practice, which will ensure you diligently keep your soul.
- “Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons; Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children,” Deuteronomy 4:9 – 10.
Let’s mention a few things and practices that will assist you, as a Christian, to keep your souls. Your goal as a Christian, with a restored soul, should be to keep your soul at all cost. The preservation of your soul should be the reason you do all that you do in this life.
(1.) To Keep Your Soul Hate Idolatry
This is one of the most important pieces of advice I could give anyone concerning how to keep your souls. The Lord God has zero tolerance for idolatry. He is a jealous God He wants to be number one and Him only, Exodus 34:14. Idolatry was Israel’s problem and God destroy them for it. Your god is anything or person that has first place in your life. For many people possessions and wealth hold the first place. For others a person, a career or a business may occupy that first place in your heart. That place in your heart where someone or something is esteemed above all others even oneself, that is the place reserved for the Lord God, Deuteronomy 6: 13 – 15.
The Lord is a merciful God. If a person can find the place to repent and turn to God, He is faithful and just to forgive. However, some type of sins, like idolatry, many people that practice it never repent. I repeat, some sins do not afford repentance because persons engaging in them are harden and die in sin without God, Hebrews 6: 4 – 6. Even many non-Christians who practice idolatry may never find God because they will not repent and accept the Lord Jesus Christ.
(2.) To Keep Your Soul Watch Your Speech
Anyone who keeps “his mouth and his tongue” keeps “his soul from troubles,” Proverbs 21:23. This is an important area of the Christian lifestyle. On the one hand, your speech brings eternal life by confessing your faith in God by Jesus Christ but on the other hand, it causes many persons to lose their souls. Many Christians and non-Christians lose their souls because they did not pay adequate attention to their tongue. They got involved in situations where they vowed, promised, contracted or otherwise bonded their souls in forbidden exchanges or transactions because of the words they spoke. Make every effort to keep your soul by watching your speech, James 3: 5 – 6.
Here are a few Bible characters who could not keep their souls because of their tongues. Eve, the first woman; “Ananias, with Sapphira his wife”; Samson and Judas Iscariot of course. All these people could have kept their souls but for their tongues.
(3.) Learn to Keep Your Soul by Being Vigilant
We have an enemy that desires our soul, he does not want us to keep our soul. Our souls are not his for they belong to the Lord God. However, the Adversary wants all humanity to lose it soul and spend eternity with him in torments because God made us (man) in His image. Therefore, friends, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world,” 1 Peter 5:8-9.
What should you be watching for? Keep your soul by watching for:
- Seemingly innocent opportunities that will ensnare your soul.
- Watch for snares or traps the devil will disguise in your path. The options for disguise are numberless for they maybe disguised as a great spouse, friend, job, cure for sick love one, deal, friendship, or business opportunity.
- Watch for and resist temptations.
- Watch not only with your eyes but also with the eyes of the Holy Spirit.
- Watch and pray because we are unaware of the time of his attack on our soul, Matthew 24:43; Mark 13:33, 37.
- Watch because we must be sober, awake and aware of all attempts for us not to keep our soul, 1 Thessalonians 5:6.
- Jesus wants you to be watchful to keep your soul, Revelation 3:3.
- By watching you will know how to keep your soul by knowing what “things to escape” from, Luke 21:36.
(4.) Learn to Keep Your Soul by Keeping the Word of God
The Word of God is both your defensive and offensive weapon, which assist to protect and to keep your soul, Ephesians 6:17. Keep your soul by knowing, keeping and doing the Word of God. Keep the Word of God hidden in your heart, Psalm 119:11. Know the Word of God by personal Bible Study, diligent in your church attendance, memorization of Scriptures, speaking and listening to great ministry of the Word. Friends don’t lose your soul because of ignorance of the Word of God, Hosea 4:6.
I have to revise my opinion; this is one of the most important advices I could give you. By knowing and keeping the Word of God you will possess Scriptural knowledge of idolatry which will assist you in keeping your soul; you will learn how to conduct your conversation to keep your soul, Psalm 50:23; the Scriptures will inform you how to be vigilant and what to be watchful for to keep your soul. The Word of God will also provide you with an appreciation of the role of your Pastor in the keeping of your soul, Hebrews 13:17.
There are so many other things to tell you to do to keep your soul, make daily appointments with your self to pray and keep them; do a fast at least once every week; love others as Christ love you and died for you. I will stop here for today.
In closing, “Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator,” 1 Peter 4:19. Ultimately, God keeps your soul. He is “the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls,” 1 Peter 2:25. However, your behavior goes a long way in deciding whether you lose or keep your soul. Accept Jesus today and allow his Holy Ghost to keep your soul from falling but above all, value your soul above every thing on earth.
