How Would You Find a Meaningful Name For The LORD?

The Lord Jesus is Christ

Ignorant of the Name of the LORD

Hagar ran away from Sarai, Abraham’s wife into the desert. There the angel of God found her and they had a conversation, Genesis 16:6 – 13. Hagar without any knowledge of the name of the LORD gave Him a name. The name Hagar gave the LORD reflects the circumstances in which she met Him.

”And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that  seest me? Genesis 16:13

So up until now there is no formal name found in the Scriptures for the LORD, however, that shall change shortly. The Lord told Moses, His name is “I AM THAT I AM”, Exodus 3:14. Then the Lord made an addition to that name: He told Moses to tell the Jews, The LORD God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, has “sent me to you”; that is my name forever and that is my memorial to all generations, Exodus 3:15.

They did not Know the LORD by the Name “JEHOVAH”

The LORD also told Moses that although he “appeared” to his ancestors they knew him by the name of “God Almighty” but they did not know Him by the name “JEHOVAH”, Exodus 6:3.

David told us in the book of the Psalm that “JEHOVAH” is the name of the LORD and He is God “over all the earth”, Psalm 83:18.

From the Scripture we also learnt that the LORD wants His name to be “declared” in the entire earth, Exodus 9:16.

Giving the LORD a name consistent with the circumstances of your encounter with Him is good because that name would always be meaningful to you. However, by nature of such a nomenciature that also means each person could have a different name for Him because circumstances vary from person to person the result, confusion.

The Name of the LORD God Seem to Become Less General and More Human in Nature

The Lord told Moses that His name is “I AM THAT I AM”. This phrase is popular as the Tetragammaton, the Holy Name of God.  This is the LORD’s name and it is not a name. It’s similar to Hagar’s naming system, the LORD promises to be whatever you need him to be, your provision. If you are hungry, I am your bread, if you are thirsty I Am you water and if you are weak I Am your strength. A name is more expressive of a person and not his characteristics.

As we traverse the Scriptures towards the Revelation of Jesus Christ, the names of the LORD God seem to become less general and more human in nature. The name “God Almighty” is sounding more like a tile than a name. However, “JEHOVAH” is a name unlike the immediate previous description but we still cannot identify with the name as we could with say, “Moses”. But the LORD God infinite in wisdom has more revelations of His name as we study His Word.
