Messianic Prophecy Foretells Jesus Suffering
Many of Jesus’ experiences were foretold in many Messianic Prophecies hundred of years before he was born. Most, if not all Messianic Prophecies, including the piercing of Jesus’ hands and feet, and the piercing of Jesus’ side and many more, were made before Jesus’ birth. Every aspect of Jesus’ life has a Messianic Prophecy associated with it.
Today, let’s look at the Messianic Prophecy which foretells one aspect of Jesus’ suffering, He was slapped and “spat upon”.
The Messianic Prophecy
The Lord speaking through his prophet, Isaiah foretell of Jesus’ suffering: ”I offered my back to those who beat me,
my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting,” Isaiah 50:6. This is the only reference in the Bible for this Messianic Prophecy.
Messianic Prophecy: The Fulfillment
The Gospel according to St. Mark provides a reference for the fulfillment of this Messianic Prophecy: ”Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him,” Mark 14:65. Other relevant Scriptures include John 18:22; 19:1-3.
Mark’s Gospel paints a vivid picture of anger and violence directed at Jesus after he answered the High Priest, thus fulfilling this Messianic Prophecy.
