Paul Debated Jesus Christ & His Resurrection
Welcome to you, to our Book of Acts Bible Study, “Apostle Paul Declared Unknown God – Jesus Christ - Creator of Heaven and Earth to Citizens of Athens!” Today, we shall finish our study of Acts Chapter Seventeen, Acts 17: 16 – 34.
Apostle Paul had departed with all speed from Berea to Athens because the envious Jews from Thessalonica had followed him to Berea. While he waits in Athens for Silas and Timothy, “his spirit was stirred in him when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry,” Acts17:16.
Therefore, while Paul waited for Silas and Timothy he “disputed” with the citizens of Athens. He debated with the Jews and with “devote persons” in their synagogue and in the “market daily”, Acts 17:17. He debated Jesus Christ and his resurrection, Acts 17:18.
”(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing,)” Acts 17:21.
Therefore, “philosophers of the Epicureans and of the Stoics” brought Paul to an auditorium, the Areopagus, to explain the doctrine of Jesus Christ, to the people of Athens, Acts 17:19 – 20. This series of events presented Apostle Paul with another opportunity to declare Jesus Christ and him crucified.
Apostle Paul started his discourse to the audience at the auditorium with an obvious observation, “I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious,” Acts17:22. Then he explained how the citizens of Athens were superstitious.
During one of their devotions, Paul had seen an inscription “TO THE UNKNOWN GOD”. Seeing the Athenians’ god is unknown, therefore they ignorantly worship him. Paul used this fact to present and declare Jesus Christ to them, Acts 17:23.
Jesus Christ Creator of Heaven and Earth
Apostle Paul explained to the Athenians, Jesus is the Creator of heaven and earth and all their contents. He further explained, because Jesus is Lord of “heaven and earth” He does not live in “temples” that are made by man, Acts 17:24.
Apostle Paul also explained to the residents and “strangers”of Athens how to worship God, Acts 17:25. He continued to expound, Jesus had “made of one blood all nations of men.” Therefore, there is no spiritual distinction among us for the Lord sees us alike, Acts 17:26.
Finally, Apostle Paul continued by encouraging the residents of the city to “seek the Lord” because if they do they will find Him, Acts17:27. Paul told them to “repent” for the Day of Judgment is inevitable, Acts17:31.
In closing, many persons hold diverse opinions, beliefs and perceptions of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Some may mock when they hear the preaching of the Gospel of Christ, similar to how they behave during Apostle Paul’s discourse, Acts 17:32. Still, others take it lightly and speak what ever they fell about the kingdom of heaven.
Nevertheless, it’s note worthy, none of our behaviors can alter the truth of God. What God has ordained to happen who can change it? Seeing we cannot change the Lord’s plans let us be ready to meet Jesus Christ when he comes!
