Jesus Priest Forever Like Melchizedek
We are continuing our examination of Messianic Prophecies with Jesus a priest forever like Melchizedek.
The Messianic Prophecy Jesus Priest Forever
“The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek,” Psalm 110:4, Hebrews 7:21.
The Lord through King David, declared Jesus a priest forever like Melchizedek. Similar, to most of the other Messianic Prophecies in the Book of the Psalms, King David is the prophet making this prophecy.
The Lord God “swore” by Himself that Jesus priest forever “after the order of Melchisedec,” Hebrew 7:17, 21. There is no one greater to sware by therefore the Lord sware by Himself.
The first Advent of Christ changed everything. Christ’s First Advent changed how we receive forgiveness of sin, how we inherit eternal life, even the priesthood was changed. Jesus was declared a priest forever, not like Aaron but like another priest, Melchisedec, a priest forever, Hebrews 7:11 – 12.
“For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God,” Hebrews 7:19. This “better hope” is in Christ Jesus.
The priesthood, therefore, was changed because of the “weakness and unprofitableness” of it, Hebrews 7:18. With a change in the priesthood, the law of “necessity” had to be changed, Hebrews 7:12.
Christ Jesus Priest Forever Because he Lives Forever
There were many priests because of death. However, Jesus because he lives forever is a priest forever. We don’t have to worry about him dying and another priest whom we do not know taking his place. Jesus lives forever, he is a priest forever. Jesus priesthood is unchanging.
Now, Jesus is able to save completely any person who comes seeking God, through him, because “he ever liveth to make intercession for them,” Hebrews 7:25. Our priest will die no more for he lives forever to intercede on our behalf.
With the change in the priest-hood comes new laws, a New Covenant was establish between God and his people. This covenant is radically different from the first, Hebrews 8:10-13.
The tablets of stone on which the first covenant was written were exchanged for the fleshy tables of our hearts. In this New Covenant, the Lord has written His laws in our hearts.
Jesus Priest Forever Fulfillment of Messianic Prophecy
The fulfillment of this Messianic Prophecy is recorded Hebrews 5:5, 6; 6:20 & 7:15 – 17.
Mary could not touch Jesus immediately after his resurrection because as a high priest he had not yet gone into the holy of holies, John 20:17.
In closing, the Lord God declares Jesus a priest forever, changed the priesthood and changed the laws governing the priest and his duties. Consequently, we have a priest in Jesus Christ who lives forever to make intercession for us. Christ priesthood is unchanging Christ Jesus priest forever.
