Fruits Worthy of Repentance
“Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham,” (Luke 3:8).
A religious person invited Jesus Christ for dinner and he went. While he was there a prostitute came uninvited to see him. She was not interested in food for her heart was broken. She brought an “alabaster box of ointment”, (Luke 7:37). She never said a word. She just stooped behind Jesus, at his feet weeping. As she cried, she washed his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. Then she kissed his feet and anoint them with the ointment, (Luke 7:36-50; Mark 14:1-9; Matthew 26:6-13).
“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death”, (2 Corinthians 7:10).
All of us are sinners but not all of us are repentant. This woman was experiencing “godly sorrow” owing to the nature of her profession she had many sins. She was sorry for her sins and this sorrow led her to repent. She did not say a word but she did not need to for Jesus knew her heart.
How can you be sorry for your sins and nobody seen any fruits worthy of repentance?
“Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little”, (Luke 7:47).
How can you be sorry for your sins and nobody seen any fruits worthy of repentance? Repentance is of the heart so we cannot observe it at work. However, one can perceive the state of your heart by your actions. We know, by her actions, this woman of the night had repented from her former lifestyle and turned to God for forgiveness.
All her actions produced fruits worthy of repentance, she was repentant:-
- She was humbly at Jesus’ feet, (Luke 7:38).
- She was weeping,(Luke 7:38).
- Broken, (Psalm 51:17).
- Women take such pride in their hair for her to use her hair to wipe Jesus feet shows humility and submission to Christ, (Luke 7:44).
- She kissed his feet – worship ,(Luke 7:38).
- Anointed his feet with ointment shows caring and love, (Luke 7:38)
When we are truly sorry for our sins ours actions will produce fruits worthy of repentance
The actions of this woman produced fruits worthy of repentance, therefore she did not need to speak for Jesus to understand her actions, her heart.
Jesus Christ cannot forgive our sins if we refuse to repent. Repentance puts us in favor with God and provides a basis on which to forgive our sins. This prostitute repented from her sinful lifestyle and turned to God and he forgave her sins. The same outcome awaits each of us if we follow her example, forgiveness.
Finally, when we are truly sorry for our sins ours actions will produce fruits worthy of repentance. John called this, “bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance,” (Matthew 3:8). Jesus is compelled to respond to a broken and contrite heart because He is a just God,(Psalm 51:17).
