Expectations of Politicians

“And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of the LORD; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried”, Deuteronomy 21:5.

Why should any nation expect Godly decisions from politicians who are not Believers of Jesus Christ is beyond me. Recently, there have been so much negative and unheard of incidents involving “supposedly men of God” it is unbelievable. Nevertheless, there are still many genuine men and women of God around. Are our expectations of politicians too high?

The Lord never intended any separation between church and state because the priests are the ministers of God. They are the chief decision makers in any matter concerning the people. How can a people expects its leaders to make “righteous judgments” concerning issue like abortion, homosexuality and gay marriage when their leaders have, at best, a fleeting relationship with Christ Jesus? Are our expectations of our politicians too high?

Misplaced Expectations of Politicians

One major role of the priest is to bless the people of the country “in the name of the LORD “. Our leaders by the very nature of the design of the political system cannot combine their role as a Believer and a representative of the people. They have to remain separated. Therefore, they can never bless the people openly and from say the Senate or House of Representative. Are our expectations of politicians too high?

Not only are our leaders restrained by a system of separation of church and state but also there are no known Believers in the Senate or House of Representative. It would be hopeful knowing they are there but that is not the case. A Believer cannot be a Believer in secret for one has to talk about Jesus.

High Expectations of Politicians Dangerous

Finally, the importance of leaders who are directed by God can never be emphasized enough. Their direction can either bless or curse a nation. “For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed”, Isaiah 9:16 Is our expectations of politicians too high? Are the expectations we have of our political leaders misplaced?

Born again politicians should be the final voice on matters of national interest and controversial for “by their word shall every controversy” be tried. No wonder they are so many cases of infidelity, greed, dishonesty, great chasm between their spoken words and their corresponding actions, corruption and bribery. Are our expectations of our politicians too high and misplaced? When the priest speaks, God speaks; if there is no priest to speak, we are in trouble.
