Learn From Jesus - How to Catch Men
Jesus teaches fisherman (at sea) how to catch men? Do men live in water? Wherever Jesus went people would throng him to hear him teach the Word of God.
On this occasion, in order to prevent the multitude from overwhelm him, Jesus got creative. He was by a lake (Gennesaret) so he got up into one of the ships. Then he asked the owner of the ship to “thrust out a little from the land.” Then he taught the crowd from “out of the ship”, Luke 5:3.
After the Bible Study, Jesus decided to reward the owner of the ship, Simon Peter, with a catch of fish for the use of his boat and also give him his first lesson. Jesus was going to teach this fisherman, – at sea -how to catch men. He, therefore, instructed Peter “launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught,” Luke 5:4. Realize, Jesus was not about to teach a seasoned fisherman how to catch fish! No! Jesus was teaching Simon Peter, how to be an evangelist, how to catch men. How to make people become Believers in Jesus Christ. Can we do that? How did you come to be a Believer? Someone assisted you to believe in Jesus Christ by telling you the good news of salvation. That is what how to catch men, really means.
Learn How to Catch Men – Must be Obedient
Peter, an experienced fisherman, explained to the Lord of Lords the previous night’s fishing trip was futile. Nevertheless, he complied with Jesus’ request. Unknown to Simon Peter, at this point, he just fulfilled the first requirement for him to receive Jesus’ lesson, how to teach a fisherman at sea how to catch men.
This fishing expedition was a massive success. They enclosed a huge catch of fish. It was so large their nets broke. The catch was so colossal Peter had to seek assistance from his “partners”.
Additionally, it was successful to the extent it had the potential to destroy them. Another ship came to their aid. But both ships were so filled with fishes “they began to sink”, Luke 5:7.
Sinful Man Does Not Know How to Catch Men
Finally, what might your attitude be to such an incident? Simon Peter and his “partners”, James and John (Luke 5:10) were “astonished” Luke 5:9.
But Peter was an adept student. When he perceived the point to the lesson Jesus was teaching for the Scriptures said when he “saw it”, his attitude seems strange. Simon Peter, worshiped Jesus. He got down on his knees on the floor of the ship “at Jesus’ knees”. Then Peter says, “depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” Luke 5:8.
Ordinarily, Peter’s comment does not fit into these circumstances. But then we realize this is no ordinary incident. Jesus was teaching a fisherman (at sea) how to catch men? This was a very unorthodox venue, we are enlightened. Do men live in the sea? There could be some advantages to that notion!
In closing, Jesus teaching fisherman how to catch men, is about obedience. One of our primary purposes as Believers in Jesus Christ, is to lead others to him. Peter understood the lesson: if one is obedient to Jesus Christ his success, generally, as a Believer, could overwhelm him. Specifically, one’s success, in evangelism, is also dependent on one’s obedience to Jesus Christ’ instructions, how to catch men.
Jesus Christ Commissioned Believers How to Catch Men
Jesus commands us:
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen,” Matthew 28:19-20. This is the Believer’s charge to how to catch men.
Peter understood that. This was so important to Peter he left everything as soon as he got to shore and followed Jesus Christ. Jesus reassured him with: “Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.”, Luke 5:10. In other words, be brave, be bold because from now you will “win souls” for me. You will know how to catch men for the Kingdom of Heaven. What are you doing to lead others to the Kingdom of heaven? Do you have success as an Evangelist for Jesus? Do you really know how to catch men?
